Mahindra SUV Sales Grow 14% in September

Mahindra sold 64,092 utility vehicles in the domestic market in September, compared with 56,233 units in the same month last year. That represents a 14% increase.

Mahindra uses the term utility vehicles in its sales reporting, while the company also refers to these products as SUVs in its September sales announcement. The utility vehicle category covers Mahindra’s passenger vehicle business.

The larger picture remains positive. Mahindra sold 3,58,142 utility vehicles between April and September 2026, compared with 2,97,570 units during the corresponding period in 2025. That is a 20% increase.

September Sales Across Mahindra’s Vehicle Business

Mahindra’s commercial vehicle business also recorded growth during September.

LCV sales below 2 tonnes increased 19% to 4,044 units from 3,386 units a year earlier. LCV sales in the 2-tonne to 3.5-tonne category rose 13% to 26,376 units.

Three-wheelers were the fastest-growing category in the September sales table. Mahindra sold 16,343 three-wheelers, including electric three-wheelers, compared with 13,017 units in September 2025. That is a 26% increase.

The three-wheeler category has also recorded strong year-to-date growth, rising 53% during April-September 2026.

Electric Origin SUVs Cross 1 Lakh Billings

Mahindra also highlighted a milestone for its Electric Origin SUV range.

According to the company, it has crossed 1 lakh billings of its Electric Origin SUVs since launch.

This is a billing figure rather than a separate monthly retail sales number. Mahindra’s September release does not provide a model-wise or monthly sales breakdown for its Electric Origin SUVs, so the contribution of the electric models to September’s 64,092 utility vehicle figure cannot be determined from it.

Exports Decline in September but Remain Higher Year to Date

Exports were the only category in Mahindra’s September table to record a year-on-year decline.

Mahindra exported 4,019 vehicles in September 2026, down 7% from 4,320 units in September 2025.

However, the year-to-date picture remains positive. Mahindra’s exports stood at 30,031 units between April and September 2026, up 48% from the corresponding period last year.

The September decline is worth watching, although one month’s export number is not enough to establish a broader trend.

What the September Numbers Tell Us

September’s 14% growth in domestic utility vehicle sales is lower than the growth recorded during the earlier months of the financial year.

Based on Mahindra’s cumulative figures, the company sold 3,58,142 utility vehicles between April and September 2026 and 64,092 of those came in September. This means April-August sales were 2,94,050 units.

For the same period in 2025, April-August utility vehicle sales were 2,41,337 units, calculated by subtracting September’s 56,233 units from the April-September total of 2,97,570.

That puts April-August growth at roughly 22%, compared with 14% growth in September.

One month is not enough to establish a change in the underlying growth trend, but the difference is worth watching as the festive season progresses.

Utility vehicles also accounted for about 56% of Mahindra’s reported September auto volume. This highlights the importance of the SUV business to the company’s automotive sales mix.

The three-wheeler business was another notable performer. Its 26% September growth and 53% year-to-date growth were both higher than the corresponding growth rates reported for utility vehicles.

Exports were weaker in September, but the 48% year-to-date increase shows that the longer-term export trend remains positive.

What to Watch Next

The next few months should provide a better indication of whether Mahindra can maintain its current SUV growth rate through the festive period.

The key numbers to watch are:

  • Whether domestic utility vehicle growth remains in the double digits.
  • Whether the 20% year-to-date SUV growth rate holds as the financial year progresses.
  • Whether three-wheeler growth remains as strong as the 53% year-to-date increase.
  • Whether exports recover after September’s 7% decline.
  • How Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUVs contribute to future sales as the company builds on the 1 lakh billing milestone.

For now, Mahindra’s September numbers show continued growth in its core utility vehicle business, strong momentum in three-wheelers and a significant year-to-date increase in exports, despite the monthly decline.
