Mahindra Thar OG Launched in India: Price, Specs, and What’s New

Mahindra has launched the new Thar OG in India. This is the successor to the popular three-door Thar that was first launched back in 2020. The Thar OG starts at Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and deliveries will begin from 11 October 2026.
The Thar changed the game for lifestyle SUVs in India when it first came out. It built a whole community of off-road enthusiasts around itself, with over 4 lakh customers so far. With the Thar OG, Mahindra has kept the boxy, rugged look that made the Thar famous, but added a lot of new engineering underneath to make it more refined and capable.
In this post, we cover everything you need to know about the new Thar OG, including its price, variants, engine options, features, and what has changed from the older model.
Mahindra Thar OG Price and Variants
The Thar OG is offered across three variants: AXT, LXT, and ZXT. It comes with three engine choices, multiple transmissions, and both RWD and 4WD drivetrain options. Here is the full variant-wise pricing:

| ZXT | Rs 13.99 lakh | Rs 17.49 lakh | Rs 17.49 lakh | Rs 18.99 lakh | Rs 16.09 lakh | Rs 16.60 lakh | Rs 17.75 lakh |
All prices are ex-showroom. One thing to note here is that this is an introductory price. It is valid only for deliveries made until 30 November 2026, so buyers who want the launch price will need to book early.
What’s New on the Mahindra Thar OG
The biggest change on the Thar OG is not something you can see, it is what’s underneath. Mahindra has built the new Thar OG on the M_Glyde 4G platform, which is stiffer than before. This gives the SUV more confidence both on the road and off it.
A few key mechanical upgrades:
- Rear PENTALINK suspension with Watts Link: This is a new suspension setup at the rear that improves cornering stability and gives more precise control, especially useful on uneven roads.
- DAVINCI Damping technology: This uses Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD), which basically means the suspension adjusts itself for a plush ride depending on the road surface. Mahindra is calling this the best-ever ride quality on a Thar.
- Electric Power Steering (EPS): The older Thar had hydraulic steering, which could feel heavy at low speeds. The new EPS setup makes parking and manoeuvring much easier.
- Better NVH damping: Mahindra has also worked on cabin insulation, so the Thar OG should feel quieter inside than before.
Together, these changes are meant to fix the biggest complaints buyers had about the old Thar, mainly the stiff ride and heavy steering, while keeping the go-anywhere character intact.
Design and Styling
The Thar OG keeps its boxy stance and instantly recognisable silhouette, but gets a fair bit of visual refresh:
- A bold new front grille
- New LED headlamps with signature C-shaped LED DRLs
- New LED ice-cube fog lamps with a cornering function
- New rugged front and rear bumpers, with a wider track
- New R19 alloy wheels
- New LED taillamps
On the inside, the highlight is the Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery, which is a new addition. There’s also a soft second-row armrest with a cupholder, something that was missing before.
Mahindra has also added two new colour options: Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue, on top of the six existing colours.
Engine and Performance Options
The Thar OG continues with three engine choices, all of which get more power and torque compared to before (except the CRDe diesel, which stays the same):
- G20 TGDi mStallion Petrol: 119 kW and 330 Nm
- D22 mHawk Diesel: 111.9 kW and 330 Nm
- D117 CRDe Diesel: 87.2 kW and 300 Nm (unchanged)
Buyers can choose between manual and automatic transmissions depending on the variant and engine, and both RWD and 4WD layouts are available.
For off-roading, the Thar OG gets an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD), available on the 4WD versions. It also comes with dedicated Terrain Modes for Mud, Sand, and Snow, which adjust the vehicle’s settings automatically depending on the surface. This should make the Thar OG easier to drive off-road, even for people who are not experienced off-roaders.
Safety Features
Safety has clearly been a focus area for Mahindra with this update. The Thar OG comes with:
- 6 airbags in total, including 4 HPTS (Head Pelvis Thorax Shoulder) airbags for front and rear passengers
- All four disc brakes, a first for the Thar
- A full ESP 9.3 suite with rollover mitigation
- Front parking sensors
This is a big step up from the outgoing Thar, which had fewer airbags and a mix of disc and drum brakes.
Variant-wise Feature Breakdown
Here’s a quick look at what you get across the three variants.
AXT (base variant) gets Electric Power Steering, push button start, dual airbags, a roll cage, R18 steel wheels, halogen headlamps, LED taillamps, rear AC vents, and disc brakes at the front with drums at the rear.
LXT adds a lot over the AXT, including the Electronic Locking Differential and Terrain Modes (on 4WD), R18 alloy wheels, a 26.03 cm touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, rear wiper washer, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and electrically adjustable ORVMs.
ZXT, the top variant, adds the new R19 alloys, new LED headlamps and fog lamps, a wireless charger, disc brakes on all four wheels, a rear view camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, front parking sensors, and the full set of 6 airbags with HPTS protection.
| AXT | LXT (over AXT) | ZXT (over LXT) |
| Electric Power Steering | Electronic Locking Differential (4WD only) | New R19 alloy wheels |
| Push button start | Terrain Modes (4WD only) | New LED headlamps with DRL |
| Dual airbags | Terrain assist (RWD: mHawk and mStallion) | New LED front fog lamps with cornering function |
| Brake Locking Differential | R18 alloy wheels | Wireless charger |
| Tubular side footstep | 26.03 cm HD touchscreen infotainment | Disc brakes, front and rear |
| ESP with rollover mitigation | Colour MID in instrument cluster | Tyre Pressure Monitoring System |
| Roll cage | Dual tone bumpers | Rear view camera |
| R18 steel wheels | Moulded side footstep | HPTS airbags, front and rear (6 airbags total) |
| Halogen headlamps | Electrically adjustable ORVMs | Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) |
| LED taillamps | Embossed fabric seats | Front parking sensors |
| 2nd-row soft armrest on wheel arches | Cruise control | Embossed leatherette seats |

| Rear demister | Android Auto and Apple CarPlay | |

If safety is a priority, the ZXT is clearly the variant to go for, since features like the extra airbags and front parking sensors are exclusive to it.
Should You Buy the Mahindra Thar OG?
The Thar OG looks like a solid update rather than a complete reinvention, and that seems to be exactly what Mahindra was aiming for. The changes to the suspension, steering, and damping should fix the biggest everyday usability complaints from the older Thar, while the extra safety kit and updated styling make it feel more up to date.
If you already loved the Thar for its rugged character and off-road ability, the OG keeps all of that intact and adds genuine improvements to ride comfort and safety. For buyers who found the older Thar too stiff or basic for daily use, this update addresses a lot of that.
With prices starting at Rs 10.32 lakh, the Thar OG remains one of the more affordable ways to get into a proper 4WD lifestyle SUV in India, though that entry price is only for the base AXT variant on the CRDe diesel engine. Most buyers looking at 4WD variants with more features should expect to spend closer to Rs 16 lakh to Rs 19 lakh on-road.
